Interview with Thierry Simon, global head of the Real Estate and Hotel group of Calyon's Structured Finance division

Calyon has built on its ability to structure recourse and non-recourse real estate financing transactions to develop true sector expertise. We provide advice on financing matters to clients at an early stage in the process and propose the full range of the bank's products.
While our services are designed for real estate, hotel and leisure industry professionals, they are also used by corporates and institutional investors seeking to derive maximum value from their property assets and, at its request, by other clients of the Crédit Agricole group, an extremely active player in the real estate business.

We have a team of 170 individuals worldwide, and in order to understand and meet client needs as closely as possible, we run local operations in many countries:

  • In the United States with real estate, hotel, homebuilders and gaming specialists,
  • In Western Europe, notably in the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Italy. We are also adding a specialised real estate and hotel team in Germany,
  • In Central Europe in Prague, Warsaw and soon Budapest,
  • In Asia our base of operations is in Hong Kong with units also based in Singapore, Tokyo and Sydney.

Senior Bankers are assigned to each of our clients for their global activities and are able to direct them to Calyon's various areas of expertise. As a result, we can follow clients' real estate projects throughout the world. For example, this has been the case with Westfield, Australia's shopping centre leader, for which we were able to finance the 2006 acquisition of four property portfolios in England in very short time. Currently we are working with Westfield on securitising these portfolios based on these assets and are assisting them in their developments in the United States.

Calyon is one of only a small number of banks that offers:

In September 2006, this approach received official recognition from Euromoney, which ranked us first among real estate commercial banks in France and Spain and second among investment banks in these two countries. Calyon is ranked in the top five in other countries in Europe and Asia and fourth among real estate banks worldwide.

Calyon also played a leading role in the main real estate and hotel deals in 2005 , including the acquisition of the French listed property company Gecina by the Spanish property company Metrovacesa, the securitisation-based refinancing of KLM's head office, and notably arranged the largest hotel financing deal in Asia, winning recognition from FinanceAsia, The Asset (Triple A Awards 2005), Euromoney Project Finance and Asiamoney.
